What is the amygdala?

When the amygdala judges a situation as a threat, it activates the well-known stress response known as “fight, flight, or freeze”.
The body starts releasing stress hormones, the heart rate speeds up, muscle tension increases, and attention locks onto the problem. The body prepares for quick action.
Such a reaction is very useful in crisis situations. The trouble comes when it is triggered too often.
Long-term stress can lead to the brain remaining on alert even when we need to rest. A person then finds it hard to fall asleep, dwells on problems, is irritable, or feels exhausted even though they have not done anything physically demanding.
Some people describe this state as a feeling that their mind cannot switch off. In reality, it is not a failure of character or a lack of discipline. It is often a nervous system that has grown used to operating in a state of heightened alert.
How can meditation help?
This is where the findings of research into meditation and mindfulness become interesting.
Scientists have found that regular meditation practice is linked to changes in how the brain responds to stressful cues. You do not stop feeling emotions, nor do you become indifferent. You do, however, gain more space between the trigger and the reaction.
Imagine you receive an unpleasant email. In the past, you would reply immediately in anger or panic. Today you notice the tension, take a few breaths, and write the reply a little later. The situation has not changed. What has changed is the way you respond to it.
This is precisely the ability that can be developed through regular attention training.
Meditation teaches the brain to return to the present moment instead of endlessly creating catastrophic scenarios. It does not remove problems, but it can help reduce the intensity of some automatic reactions.
And that is often a greater change than it first appears.
