Mental difficulties are growing, and people are looking for accessible help

Mental health is among the main themes of society today. Research from the National Institute of Mental Health shows that mental difficulties affect an ever larger part of the population, and a significant share of problems begins as early as adolescence.

According to National Mental Health Monitoring, more than 50% of ninth-grade pupils show reduced wellbeing, and around 30% of people in the Czech Republic show symptoms of anxiety or depression.

The number of people looking for ways to work with stress, tiredness, or mental overload is also growing — still before difficulties develop into more serious problems.

Digital tools now play an ever greater role in this area. Alongside global apps focused on meditation and relaxation, however, many users run into fragmented content and find it hard to get their bearings.

This is exactly the situation the Czech project Calmory responds to.

Two years of development and the search for a working system

The Calmory app was developed over more than two years. Development focused on making sure the app matches the real situations of an ordinary day and helps people in the moments when they truly need support.

“During development, we watched how people look for help in many different places — in articles, videos, courses, or apps. The content exists, but it is often not connected, nor placed in the context of an ordinary day. That is why we designed Calmory as a clear system that lets people quickly find what they need in a given moment,” says Stanislav Knotek, director of Calmory.

The main idea of the project is a simple message: Calm can be learned.

The app’s content matches the real rhythm of the day

Calmory starts from the assumption that mental strain arises directly in the ordinary rhythm of the day — at work, in the family, in overload, or in tiredness. The app’s content is therefore structured according to the phases of the day
and according to the situations in which people truly need support.

Here, users will find, for example:

  • themed courses focused on working with stress, emotions, and mental resilience
  • short SOS techniques for getting through acute overload or anxiety
  • breathing exercises for working with the nervous system
  • meditations for working with attention
  • affirmations and short mental exercises
  • music, nature sounds, and white noise for calming or focus
  • fairy tales and stories at bedtime for children and parents

The project also includes the Calmory blog, which connects expert knowledge with practical experience. Alongside articles on breathing, movement, sleep, or how the nervous system works, it also publishes personal stories and texts that open topics society often finds hard to talk about — for example mental exhaustion, parenthood, loneliness, or the pressure to perform.

Calmory brings expert-led techniques, educational content, and personal stories together in one clear environment that responds to the situations of an ordinary day.

Calmory’s expert guarantee

The expert guarantor of the Calmory app is Mgr. Filip Hajna, a psychotherapist, licensed crisis intervention specialist, and director of the organization Velký vůz Sever, which has long been dedicated to crisis intervention, psychological help, and education in mental health.

“In practice, we see that many people come for help only when their mental overload is already very high. Yet many difficulties arise gradually, from long-term stress, tiredness, or a lost balance between performance and rest. The purpose of Calmory is to offer people tools they can use in time,” says Filip Hajna.

In his view, regular work with breath, attention, and bodily tension can contribute significantly to the prevention of mental exhaustion.

The app also has crisis situations in mind

The app also includes contacts for professional help, for example Linka první psychické pomoci (116 123) or other crisis services.

The app thus clearly distinguishes between situations that can be managed with stabilising techniques and moments when it is important to turn to professionals.

Calm as a skill. Digital tools as part of mental health care

The aim of the app is not to replace psychotherapy or professional care. Calmory focuses on prevention and everyday care for mental wellbeing, not on the treatment of mental illness.

According to the project’s creators, it is essential to change the way we think about mental wellbeing. Just as people learn to care for the body, they can learn to care for the mind.

“A large part of people do not need therapy immediately. They need to learn how to work with tension, stress, and overload that arise in ordinary life. That is exactly where a digital tool can make a great deal of sense. Calm is not something only some people have. It is a skill that can be trained, step by step.
And that is precisely what we want to show people,” says Stanislav Knotek, director of Calmory.

The app is available free of charge

The Calmory app is available to download in the App Store and Google Play and works on a freemium model. Users can try it for 14 days with full access to the content. The basic version remains available free of charge; extended content is part of a subscription.
